IB Primary Years Programme
The Primary Years Programme encourages students to think for themselves.
Welcome to the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB-PYP) at YIS! The PYP aims to develop students’ academic, social and emotional wellbeing, focusing on international-mindedness and strong personal values, as active participants in a lifelong journey of learning.
Primary school is the starting point of children’s educational journey and our aim is that their initial experience is enjoyable and motivating in every aspect. At YIS we believe that children learn best when their learning is relevant, significant, engaging and challenging. We encourage students to be curious, creative, reflective, risk takers, questioners, problem-solvers, and deep thinkers who work collaboratively. Students establish knowledge, skills and understanding through our inquiry-led and transdisciplinary approach to learning. The curriculum and individual lessons are designed to extend each student’s learning and to enable them to achieve their potential.
Primary students will spend most of their day with their classroom teacher, either inside the classroom or on the playground for outside learning.
A typical day at YIS also involves meeting specialist teachers at our school for Physical Education, Music, Indonesian Language and ICT.
Teachers regularly take their students on excursions to a museum, factory or exhibition in or nearby Yogyakarta. These excursions tie in with the Units of Inquiry the students are working on. At the end of the school year students in Grades 5 and 6 go on a two-day overnight trip in Yogyakarta.
The participation of the wider school community is acknowledged and supported by the school and the Yogyakarta Independent School encourages the active involvement of parents in our school community. We strive to build an effective parent and school partnership to enhance student achievement.
