Research Writing Workshop for Grade 5 and 6 Students

Inquiry-based learning is an approach to learning that emphasizes the student's role in the learning process. Rather than the teacher telling students what they need to know, students are encouraged to explore the material, ask questions, and share ideas. Thus, students are encouraged to share through research writing and presentation. However, writing itself can be a difficult skill to learn and master.

Last week, PYP Grade 5 and 6 students attended a research writing workshop with Ibu Artika, our MYP and DP Science teacher. They had an experiment on a microscopic living thing, yeast, learning that tiny living thing is also breathing. They then wrote down their investigation through a report.

It is hoped that this opportunity can help PYP students to have a smooth transition to the MYP. As Alexander Graham Bell once said, "Before anything else, preparation is the key to success."

Visiting the Indonesian Army Base

Getting to know the Indonesian Army helps children learn how they protect the security of our country – that means they keep us safe.

Yesterday, some of YIS students got an amazing opportunity to ride on the Indonesian famous armour, Anoa! The Anoa is a 6x6 armoured personnel carrier developed by PT Pindad of Indonesia. The vehicle is named after the Anoa, which is a type of buffalo indigenous to Indonesia.

We were invited by Batalyon Infanteri Mekanis 403/Wirasada Pratista, an Army Base in Yogyakarta, to get to know what an army is and what they do. Eventually, we could ride on the Army vehicle around the base. This could be the coolest learning experience ever!

8th Grade Science Experiment

Our 8th graders explored simple machines for doing work and how they make work more efficient, the use of energy resources globally, and some of the problems with global dependency on fossil fuels. Through laboratory experimentation, students learned the concept of 'how energy changes determine chemical changes in a combustion.' In this activity, students measured energy changes in exothermic and endothermic reactions. This activity allows students to gather data based on the evidence, and reach a conclusion, including evaluating the validity of their methods.

My Body Helps Me Interact With the World

At the beginning of the 2022/2023 school year, grade 1-2 takes the theme 'My Body Helps Me Interact With the World'. Through this theme, students learn about social science and science at the same time.

In science lessons, students learn about the functions of the Five Senses, and try to train the sensitivity of the five senses through simple experiments. From the social side, students learn about how our body parts help us interact with other people.

In this theme, students learn with many media, such as 'blindfold walking', 'scavenger hunt', and 'wordless instruction'. In addition, students also learn through videos and also bring in speakers from the Sindhen Art Community.

By adapting the theme in class, students learn about sign language through the community. The purpose of this activity is for students to understand the existence of other friends who are physically different from us, but they can use their body parts to express themselves. Students are also expected to be more empathetic when they meet friends with special needs on the street.
