My Body Helps Me Interact With the World

At the beginning of the 2022/2023 school year, grade 1-2 takes the theme 'My Body Helps Me Interact With the World'. Through this theme, students learn about social science and science at the same time.

In science lessons, students learn about the functions of the Five Senses, and try to train the sensitivity of the five senses through simple experiments. From the social side, students learn about how our body parts help us interact with other people.

In this theme, students learn with many media, such as 'blindfold walking', 'scavenger hunt', and 'wordless instruction'. In addition, students also learn through videos and also bring in speakers from the Sindhen Art Community.

By adapting the theme in class, students learn about sign language through the community. The purpose of this activity is for students to understand the existence of other friends who are physically different from us, but they can use their body parts to express themselves. Students are also expected to be more empathetic when they meet friends with special needs on the street.

Getting to Know about Electrical Circuit

In everyday life, modern humans are assisted by electronic devices to fulfill their needs. Starting from refrigerators, microwaves, air conditioners, lamps, rice cookers, smartphones, to computer devices, all are electronic devices. But how do electronic devices turn on?

This time, grade 12 students learned about electrical circuits with the help of our Science teacher, Ibu Josephine. Electronic devices cannot be separated from the presence of an electrical circuit. An electrical circuit is a connection of various passive electrical elements such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, transformers, voltage sources, current sources, and switches.

Multicultural Food Day

Children learn best about different people and languages through first-hand experience. They are sensory beings who learn through the experiences of touch, see, smell, hear and taste. It can be challenging to incorporate all five senses into a cultural lesson. Or is it?

For our first unit, Grade 3-4 students are learning about Diversity while Grade 5-6 students are learning about Multiculturalism. In Science, the students are introduced to cultures through international cuisines. One of them is from India.

Today, we invited Ibu Lata Duseja, a mom of our classmate, to teach us about healthy traditional culinary from India. She kindly presented various dishes, including the vegetarian ones from India. She also wonderfully cooked Poori Bhaji, a traditional breakfast dish in North India made of poori (deep-fried rounds of flour) and aloo (potato) bhaji (a spiced potato dish which may be dry or curried). We enjoyed learning Indian words for spices, watching the cooking demo, touching and rolling the fluffy dough, as well as smelling the delicious cooking. The best part of all is, of course, tasting the yummy hot and puffy Poori Bhaji! One is always not enough!

PYP Students Learn about Diversity

Hello there!
We are from Grade 3 & 4.

In our first Unit of Inquiry, we explored the Central Idea of how knowing and appreciating diversity can enable us to become global citizens.

Learning about diversity around the globe helped us understand the world. We had our individual research and created a booklet about a country of our choice with information such as the flag and its meaning, geography, religions, festivals, traditional arts, music, dances, sports, costumes, culinary, stories, and some fun facts.

This research project made us feel like having a field trip around the world!

Water and Sand Class

Playing with water and sand will increase fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through actions like pouring, squirting, scrubbing, stirring and squeezing. Water and sand offer different textural and temperature experiences, helping children acknowledge sensory changes and respond to them.

During the Water and Sand lesson, Preschool students observed how Butterfly Pea flowers would color the water purple. They also played with food coloring to make the sand green, red, yellow, and blue. How fascinating!

Stirring the water, mixing the sand, and noticing the vibrant colors seem so magical for the students. As a bonus, they could play with the sand together. This is how learning feels like a holiday!

Exploring the Botanical Garden

Contact with nature can enhance creativity, bolster mood, lower stress, improve mental acuity, well-being and productivity, cultivate social connectedness, and promote physical activity. It also has myriad educational benefits for teaching and learning.

During Science lesson, Preschool students happily explored our Botanical Garden to learn about living things. They enjoyed saying hello to the turkeys and geese, smelling the purple wild petunias, watching the mini waterfall, checking inside the bird's nests, counting the geese's eggs, even picking up the lime, jack fruit, and mangoes!

Here at YIS, we are learning about nature by being part of the nature. How refreshing!
